FAIRVIEW, N.J. -- Grgo "Gargurino" Matesic, of Fairview, died on Tuesday, Jan. 31. He was 84.
Born in Croatia, Matesic came to the United States in 1964. Before he retired, he was a longshoreman for Maher Terminals, in Elizabeth. "Grgo's greatest love was to visit his homeland, Susak, Croatia," information from the funeral home noted.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maria (Tarabocchia) Matesic; children Anthony Matesic and his wife Karen, Christine Piccinich and her husband Anthony, and Nicole Morin and her husband Carl; and grandchildren Jenna Ottina and her husband Rob, Ava and Christopher Piccinich, Carl Morin Jr., and Anthony, Gregory, Amanda and Zachary Matesic.
Matesic is also survived by his siblings, Maria and her husband Bosko, Antonia and her husband Pere, Angelo, Anica and her husband Milan, Martin, and Liberata and her husband Nado; sister-in-law Alba and her husband Nick; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded by his son, Walter Matesic, and his siblings Ivan, Juliano, and Rina and her husband Paulo.
Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at A.K. Macagna Funeral Home, 495 Anderson Ave., in Cliffside Park. The funeral will be from the funeral home at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, then to Our Lady of Fatima Church, in North Bergen, for a 9:30 a.m. funeral mass. Entombment will follow, at Fairview Mausoleum, in Fairview.
